What does poetry mean to me?
Poetry has been a staple in my growth and development when it comes to coping and self-expression. Definitely my go-to for self-care and mental health. When I was first diagnosed with depression and C-PTSD, I felt isolated due to the stigma surrounding mental health at the time. I found that writing down my thoughts and emotions in a poetic form was a therapeutic way to express myself. Poetry allowed me to release my feelings in a creative way and gave me a sense of relief and comfort.
Poetry, well writing in general has connected me to a community of people who also share a love for writing. Through this exploration, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of myself and my experiences. It was through poetry that I was able to find my voice again after being silenced for what felt like forever. I now celebrate my identity as a neurodivergent black woman who is not defined by her trauma, but empowered by her healing. I am grateful for the ability to express myself in written form. I pray that my words are a vessel to positively impact others experiencing difficult times.
